Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced that tomorrow, 16th December, London and parts of South England will move into tier three.
This will be brought in across Greater London, parts of Essex and parts of Hertfordshire.
Tier three rules will ban restaurants and pubs from opening unless they operate as takeaway or delivery services.
The tiers were due to be reviewed on Wednesday but concerns over the infection rate in the capital and parts of the country prompted ministers to reconsider restrictions earlier.
In his statement Mr Hancock said:
“This rise and this spread is not even across the country
“We’re seeing a sharp rise in South Wales, in London and parts of the east and south east of England”
