Headlines
Throughout 2021, there has been widespread coverage on the national driver shortage in the UK, the latest estimate from Logistics UK suggests that there is a deficit of 76,000.
The profession has recently been affected by Brexit, the Covid-19 Pandemic and the introduction of IR35, thus creating the perfect storm. Due to COVID alone, Logistics UK believe that there were 30,000 driver assessments that didn’t take place during 2020, that’s approximately 15,000 drivers that aren’t on the road now who should be.
Menzies Distribution are continuing to looking at strategies to overcome this issue to ensure that impact to service is mitigated wherever possible. This includes a revised recruitment programme, additional driver benefits and driver retention initiative – the details of which have been shared with the NFRN. We (NFRN) are continuing to work closely with Menzies Distribution to ensure member service levels are not impacted.
