Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour Party leader, who as a child helped his parents in their local shop, is one of the keynote speakers at the annual conference of the Federation in Scotland.

The event takes place in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Glasgow on Tuesday March 29.

Mr Sarwar who has been leader since 2021, is a current MSP and a former Westminster MP for Glasgow Central. He is the first person of colour and first Muslim to lead a major UK party

His father Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, went on to run a successful wholesale business and become the first Muslim MP in the UK, before moving to Pakistan to become Governor of the Punjab.

His mother Perveen, once chased down the street with a chair leg, a crook who robbed the family’s convenience store in Glasgow.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Mrs Sarwar who has four children also said Anas was: “the one who didn’t get up to mischief”.

“He’d open the door for every guest. He used to take the bins out, help me with the shopping.”
