HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has today announced that around 5.4 million Self Assessment customers have less than a month left to complete their tax return.

The deadline being the 31st January.

HMRC are expecting 12.1 million tax returns to be filed this year. With around 55% already filing their returns, more than 6.2 million customers have chosen to submit it online.

HMRC are urging customers who have not yet completed their return to act now as it may be a more time-consuming process than anticipated.

Karl Khan, HMRC’s Interim Director General for Customer Services, said:

“In what was a very difficult year for many, we are grateful to the 55% of our customers who have already submitted their returns.

“HMRC is ready to offer support to those who are yet to file their returns or are worried about paying their tax bill, but they must act now so we can help before the deadline.”

Customers with completed tax returns can see how much tax is owed and can set up a payment plan to spread their costs, up to the value of £30,000. Using the self-serve Time to Pay facility to set up monthly direct debits which can be done online. Interest will be applied to outstanding balance from 1 February 2021.
