Newcastle Fed member Sheraz Awan and his family are looking forward to a dream trip to Florida, following a surprise live appearance on national television.
Sheraz was working as usual in Westerhope Convenience Store last Saturday evening, March 11, when presenter Fleur East and an ITV cameraman came in and announced
he had won ‘a place on the plane’ as part of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway show.
The surprise visit was part of the show’s ‘happiest minute of the week’ feature, and Ms East told him: “We know you keep this shop open 365 days a year, seven days a week, you work so hard. The past two years you’ve given free loaves, 150,000 free loaves, to your local community. We think you deserve a well-earned rest, Sheraz, and so do your regulars.”
You can watch Fleur’s surprise visit on Westerhope Convenience Store’s TikTok page. The video raked in over 18,000 like and increasing the shop’s following to over 20,000!
Shop manager Julia Boyd nominated Sheraz because she felt he deserved to be recognised for the work he does for people in the local area. Crowds of people gathered outside
the shop to congratulate him following his TV appearance. Julia said: “It was lovely to see his face! He does so much for people, he deserves it.”
Sheraz told The Fed: “I had no idea this was going to happen. I was very, very pleasantly surprised and quite shocked. I didn’t really take it all in at the time. “I don’t do it for anything other than to help people, so I feel very humbled and very thankful. I believe that good things happen to good people.”
He added: “The biggest bonus is that more people in the North East will come here for bread. And, of course, the wife and kids will really enjoy the trip to Florida!”
