The Mutual started over 20 years ago when the UK high street looked a lot different than it does today. A group of NFRN members were fed up with not being able to find the right type of cover to protect their shops. Insurers were either too expensive or could not provide what the retailers needed. This sparked the conception of The Retail Mutual. Being retailers themselves the Mutual’s founding Members understood the challenges of running a high-street business.
This extensive experience and knowledge lent itself to perfecting the type of cover retailers wanted and creating a self-sufficient model that offered business owners a way to support each other by becoming Members of The Retail Mutual.
Unlike insurance providers, the Retail Mutual offers discretionary cover. The Mutual delegates its discretion to a Board of Directors appointed from its’ Membership who are or have been retail business owners themselves.
One thing that makes The Retail Mutual unique is its approach to Claims Handling, as the Mutual has the ultimate decision on claims that fall within its retention. The Mutual empowers its Directors to make key decisions and gives them the authority to agree claims that may fall outside a Member’s agreed cover levels.
The Board’s Claims Committee, themselves retailers, use their in-depth knowledge and empathy to adjudicate any claims that are appealed.
Being a part of The Retail Mutual you will become one of the 5,000 and growing members. As a Member you won’t be charged admin, cancellation, or broker fees, and will also have the option for interest free instalments and flexible payment options. If, in the unfortunate event that you have to make a claim, then there is a dedicated UK-based call centre on hand.
Home cover, Landlord cover and different types of Health cover, in association with Westfield Health, are just some of the additional covers that are available to The Retail Mutual Members. With the Home cover you can protect your home and your personal possessions. Alternative accommodation, and home emergency cover is available if required. Landlord cover offers a range of options for protecting you against liability claims, unpaid rent and accidental damage to your building, contents, fixtures, and fittings.
Fire damage, lightning, flood, and storm damage all come as standard on the Cover. As a self-employed, independent retailer running your own business can put a lot of stress and strain on your health. This is why The Retail Mutual has teamed up with Westfield Health to offer health cover which gives Members access to prompt diagnosis and treatment.
If a member of the public or a supplier injures themselves in your business premises. Public Liability covers the cost of claims that could be made against you or your business. The Retail Mutual provides cover up to £2million as standard, higher limits are available upon request.
