The Fed has welcomed the publication of an initial list of certified Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) that retailers will be able to use as return points as part of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), when it goes live in October 2027.

The announcement follows close engagement between the Fed and Exchange for Change, and comes after calls from the Fed’s National President, Hemanshu Patel, for key information to be shared with independent retailers as swiftly as possible, so they have the time and certainty needed to prepare for the scheme.

RVM suppliers included on the newly published list can be seen here.

Today’s announcement follows the recent commencement of registration for DRS, the launch of the Fed’s specialist DRS Knowledge Hub and confirmation of grant criteria that will allow eligible Fed members to apply for funding towards installing an RVM. Eligible retailers will be able to receive grants of £6,000 per site, paid in three annual instalments of £2,000, with the application process due to launch in January 2027.

Commenting, Hemanshu Patel said: “Publishing the first list of certified RVMs is an important milestone in the roll-out of the Deposit Return Scheme, and we welcome this progress. However, retailers need clear, timely information to make informed decisions about equipment, costs and the practical arrangements they will need to put in place ahead of the October 2027 launch.

“The list will be particularly important for members considering investing in an RVM and those looking to apply for grant funding. With the list expected to be updated as further machines are certified, it is important that retailers continue to receive clear updates and have sufficient time to assess their options before committing to a purchase.

“The Fed will continue to work closely with Exchange for Change, while monitoring progress and pressing for the information our members need. Independent retailers will play a crucial role in the success of DRS, and we need to ensure they are properly supported and able to prepare with confidence.”

In a statement published on Thursday, Exchange for Change said: “Certification confirms that a machine is compatible with the RVM specification required to operate within the scheme, having undergone rigorous testing and assessment to reach the certification standard. Retailers considering purchasing or leasing an RVM are advised to check the approved list before selecting a model. The list will be updated on an ongoing basis as new RVMs are certified. Certification of the RVMs has been undertaken by a specialist assessment provider tasked with independently conducting the full certification process, which will remain ongoing to allow for new RVM suppliers to submit their machines for assessment.”

Exchange for Change CEO Russell Davies said: “Publishing the first list of certified RVMs is an important step in helping retailers prepare for the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme in October 2027. Certification provides confidence that approved machines have met the requirements needed to operate within the scheme and gives retailers greater certainty as they consider their options. The new Artwork Guidance also provides retailers with approved branding that can be adopted alongside their own, helping to create a consistent and recognisable approach across the scheme.”
