Smiths News is the UK’s largest news wholesaler, operating from 39 distribution centres and serving 25,500 customers every day of the year. We work closely with publishers and retailers to meet the needs of millions of consumers across the UK.

Why stock newspapers and magazines?

Newspapers and Magazines are a core category for any successful convenience store, newsagents or grocer. They drive footfall, are a great impulse purchase to increase basket spend, and the constant churn of titles means they stay relevant and cater to a wide audience. Whether for daily news, a weekend paper to relax with or magazines to help your customers pursue their hobbies and interests – it’s a category that provides something for everyone. Make sure your title selection reflects your local community needs, it’s displayed well and promoted within store and it can be a dynamic and profitable category for you.

Our relationship with the NFRN

Working together with the NFRN is important for Smiths News, as it enables us to really understand the needs of Independent Retailers. We work closely across areas such as query resolution, customer services, supply management and resolving any delivery issues. We’re also in constant dialogue about how we can support each other to offer additional services to Independent Retailers. We want to hear what’s important to you, so send your feedback in via your local branch, or volunteer to join our next focus group.

Top Tips for Success

Your Display

Having an attractive display is really important for magazines as customers like to browse the category, and may be looking for something new. Magazines can be both a regular and an impulse purchase so make sure your display is always at it’s best – ensure the title of each magazine is visible, use a planogram to ensure titles of similar categories are displayed together. Make sure children’s magazines are within eye-line. Newspapers also need a strong display solution as often it’s the front page that catches someone’s eye.
