Return Points
Making the right choice.
RVM, Manual or Exemption?
Deposit Return Scheme return points will come in different forms.
From automated reverse vending machines (RVMs) to manual, staff-operated collection points, giving retailers flexibility in how they accept returned bottles and cans.
The decision for the final solution will depend on a variety of factors and the Fed is here to guide retailers through the options so informed choices can be made.
What you need to know
Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs)
RVMs are automatic machines that scan and accept eligible bottles and cans, allowing customers to return containers quickly.
There are many benefits to using RVMs for retail DRS:
- RVMs act as a return point and are automatic machines that will allow customers to return their bottles and cans.
- Voucher redemption: Shoppers will be able to claim their voucher, which they can then spend in your shop (from other countries, about 90% of redeemed voucher funds are spent in that shop).
- Compression of bottles and cans: Compressing bottles and cans should reduce the storage space you need for returned items before collection.
- Maintenance: RVM suppliers will also offer maintenance services, sometimes for a fee.
- Cleaning: Machines need to be cleaned to keep them functioning properly. Retailers will need to ensure their machine is working properly as machine down time can put customers off from returning their items.
- Choosing the right machine: Exchange for Change will provide an accredited list of machinery, and there is likely to be a range of options available.
Manual Takeback
Retailers participating in the DRS can process returns manually. These means accepting individual drinks containers over the counter and storing them safely for collection.
- Might it work for my shop? Yes, it can work well in a less busy shop, and will involve less capital investment than an RVM.
- Manual options: You might use simple bin bags, though this can be time-consuming if you receive a lot of bottles and cans.
- Smart boxes and other aids: Smart boxes allow automatic processing of bottles and cans saving time. However, they don’t compress bottles and cans, meaning they may need to be cleared less frequently than an RVM which squashes items.
Your business, your choice
નહીં two retailers are the same, so Fed members must make their own decision based on the business profile of their own shop.
