Fed reminds Republic of Ireland members to prepare for the Tobacco and Vape Licence ahead of August 2nd deadline

The Fed has reminded Republic of Ireland members already registered to sell tobacco and vape products before the scheme’s launch earlier this year that they must apply for a licence by August 2nd, in order to sell tobacco and vape products in the future.

Similar measures are being considered for the UK, but are still some way off, with consultation likely to happen in 2027 at the earliest.

The Fed has been outspoken in expressing the concern of members about the cost and potential disruption involved in the licencing in the Republicof Ireland as reported here.

However, the licence regime is now compulsory and non-compliance could ultimately lead to a €4,000 fine or to an imprisonment term up to 6 months or both.

To register for the licences, tobacco and vape retailers should use the following website link on the government’s Health Service Executive (HSE) website: http://hse.ie/tobacco-nicotine-licence

Key points for applicants to consider, include:

• That the licence is available for individuals aged 18 and over
• To claim a certificate you must have an in-force Tax Clearance Certificate from Revenue
• One licence must be put in place per shop and per website if you sell tobacco or vapes online.
• A licence will have one year validity
• It must be prominently displayed
